Can you receive compensation for a wrongful conviction?

Let's face it: The legal system is far from perfect. For this reason, there are times when a wrongful conviction comes into play.

Unfortunately, if you are the victim of a wrongful conviction, you don't have much say about what happens in the future. Instead, the best that you can hope for is to prove your innocence down the road.

But here is something to think about: If you have been the victim of a wrongful conviction, you may be in position to receive compensation.

Depending on where you live, you may be able to receive compensation as a result of a wrongful conviction. Also, the federal government provides a payment for each year a person spends in prison if he or she is eventually found to have been wrongfully convicted.

Note: Even if your state does not have a requirement to provide compensation, you may still be able to receive money under federal law.

Of course, this is easier said than done. There are some things that could harm your ability to receive compensation, such as:

-- If you had anything to do with your wrongful conviction, such as falsely confessing to the crime up front.

-- If you have been convicted of another felony.

-- If you are convicted of a new felony.

The amount of money that you can receive depends on many factors, including where you live and the impact of your wrongful conviction. For example, somebody who spends time in prison for one year will not receive as much money as somebody who was in prison for 20 years.

Since there is so much to think about with respect to a wrongful conviction, it's never a good idea to tackle the legal system on your own. Instead, you should consult with an attorney who has the experience and knowledge necessary to fight for and protect your rights at every turn of the road.

Although you never know what the future will bring, it's good to know that you may be able to receive compensation for a wrongful conviction. This gives you something to think about and work towards. If you are due money because of this serious error by the legal system, don't give up until you exhaust all your options.
