Children's product recalls and incidents on the rise

Every year, children across the country are injured and killed by defective products. Despite the best efforts of organizations such as Kids in Danger, there is no way of knowing if a dangerous product will make its way to market.

According to a recent report by Kids in Danger, current recall efforts received a "barely passing grade." It's important to understand some of the key statistics associated with children's product recalls in 2016:

-- There were 76 product recalls that led to the recall of approximately 66.8 million units.

-- Many types of products were recalled, including but not limited to strollers and sippy cups.

-- The overall number of children's product recalls increased 12 percent from 2015 to 2016.

-- Injuries, deaths and incidents also increased in 2016. This included seven deaths, 394 injuries and 4,842 incidents.

-- Nursery products led the way with 32 percent of all recalls. However, it was the first time in 10 years that no cribs were involved in a recall.

As you can see, despite the best efforts of both individual companies and the government (2008 Consumer Product Safety Act), children's product recalls are still extremely common in today's day and age.

If your child has been injured or killed as the result of a defective product, it's important to learn more about what happened. Not only will this help you better understand your legal rights, but it could go a long way in helping other parents avoid the same situation. Understanding the ins and outs of product liability laws will help you understand what to do next.
