Wrongfully incarcerated Michigan inmates impacted by new bill

Wrongful conviction is a very big issue around the country. The men and women who face this harsh reality often fight tooth and nail to prove that they weren't guilty. There is a fragment of light at the end of the tunnel for the people who are able to prove that they were wrongfully convicted in Michigan.

Governor Rick Snyder recently signed a bill that enables people who are wrongfully convicted to collect $50,000 for each year they are wrongfully incarcerated. The bill allows the state to pay the victims out in a lump sum; however, it also gives the state the option to spread the payments out over a 10-year period.

It is important to note that there are some limitations to this bill. If a person files a civil lawsuit and that lawsuit is successful, they wouldn't be eligible for the payments. Additionally, those who were wrongfully convicted but were also serving concurrent sentences for other convictions at the same time as the wrongful conviction wouldn't be eligible for payment.

This isn't a perfect bill; however, it is a start toward helping these individuals start a new life after the wrongful incarceration. For the men and women who are just embarking on the process of proving a wrongful conviction, a lot of work is coming their way. Fortunately, the bill also allows for legal bills to be covered.

If you are trying to prove your innocence, you need to learn your options for doing so. This is something that can be a challenge but it is possible if you are willing to put forth the time and effort.
