Woman continues her fight to overturn wrongful conviction

A Dayton woman has been fighting for many years to overturn what she calls a wrongful conviction for aggravated murder. In a case dating back to September of 1994, the woman maintains her innocence.

The victim of the crime was a 15-year-old girl. She was shot and killed when a group of people robbed the vehicle she was in.

The woman, who was 19 years old at the time, was outside her home and called 911 after hearing a gunshot.

The woman, as well as her attorney, feel that she was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

She was brought into the case after admitting that she stole a necklace from someone at the scene. This lead to a false confession, followed by many years of time in the prison system.

However, after all this time, the murder victim's sister has come forward to admit that the woman was not involved in the murder.

At this time, the woman is serving a life sentence. In addition to a hearing scheduled for the end of October, many people are petitioning in an attempt to clear her name and bring her home.

Despite the fact that the woman dropped out of grade school in her younger days, she has gone on to complete her education in prison. This includes earning a GED, a boilers engineer's license and becoming a certified paralegal.

From the outside looking in, it's hard for many people to imagine that wrongful convictions do occur from time to time. While it can be a challenge to have a wrongful conviction overturned, it's not out of the question.
