Toy-related deaths and injuries in 2016

The numbers are in for 2016, and there were approximately 240,000 toy-related injuries over the course of the year. There were also seven deaths that were linked to toys. These statistics come from the reports made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

It is worth noting that 43 percent of the deadly incidents -- three out of the seven total -- were linked to riding toys. All three of those cases also involved another motor vehicle. All of the deadly accidents involved relatively young kids. Not one of them was over 11 years old.

The statistics do not count minor injuries. They only look at instances where the child ended up in the emergency room. It stands to reason that the real total was higher, as some children likely got treatment at home or from a local doctor, rather than at the hospital.

Most injuries involve male children, rather than female ones. For 2016, a full 139,000 of the victims were male, putting them at 58 percent of the total..

The vast majority of those who ended up in the emergency room got treatment and then were released without an overnight hospital stay. That happened in 96 percent of the cases.

Above, it was noted that all of the fatal cases involved kids under 12, and that trend held true for injuries. About 69 percent, or 166,300 of the cases, involved kids who were 12 or younger. A full 73 percent involved kids who were 14 or younger.

As new Christmas presents are being played with, it's important to keep toy-related injuries in mind and to know your legal options when a child is hurt.
