Wolf Mueller and Craig Daly Part of Defense Team Challenging Mario Willis’s Wrongful 2008 Conviction

Mueller Law Firm’s founding attorney, Wolfgang Mueller, was honored to be part of the defense team along with Craig Daly that recently challenged key evidence that helped convict Detroit resident Mario Willis of murder. In lengthy recent court hearings, Wolf and the team presented a strong case showing serious problems with the investigation into the house fire that caused the death of firefighter Walter Harris in 2008.

Mr. Willis was convicted in connection with the deadly fire, which broke out at a vacant house he owned on the east side of Detroit. His handyman originally said that Mr. Willis had paid him to set the blaze, though he later claimed that he had set it accidently and Mr. Willis wasn’t involved. Mr. Harris died fighting the fire. Mr. Willis has consistently denied any involvement in the tragedy, but has spent 15 years in prison.

The focus of the hearing

The evidentiary hearing began late in 2025 and only concluded on Feb. 3. During the proceedings, Wolf and his fellow defense attorneys argued that there were two major problems with the prosecution’s case: the credibility of the handyman, their star witness, and the way that fire investigators handled their work.

At trial, the testimony of the handyman, Darian Dove, was key to Mr. Willis’s conviction. However, Mr. Dove admitted at the evidentiary hearing that he’s a “pathological liar.” He now says the fire started while he and a woman were trying to keep warm in the house, which Mr. Willis was rehabbing at the time.

Fire investigators didn’t speak to Mr. Dove or even know about him during their initial investigation. The lead investigator admitted at the hearing that had they known Mr. Dove’s story at the time, they would have labeled the fire’s cause as undetermined, not arson.

After 13 days of hearings spread out over two months, the decision whether to grant Mr. Willis’s motion for a new trial currently rests with the Third Judicial Court judge who presided over the proceedings. “We are very confident where the case sits at this point because for the first time, we were able to put on a real defense,” Mr. Mueller said.

Appeals like this can be an option after a wrongful conviction. But to have a chance, you need an attorney who focuses on this unique area of criminal defense. Not all criminal defense trial lawyers handle appeals, and of those who do, it’s often a minor part of their practice. Your best bet at justice is to work with someone who focuses 100% of their criminal law work on getting wrongful convictions in the Detroit area overturned.
